Euclid delivers its first pieces of sky survey data
At midday on Wednesday March 19, 2025, ESA released the first survey data from the Euclid space mission.
Three zones of the sky, covering a total area of 63 square degrees, have been observed and analyzed by the collaboration's scientists, including the detection of 29 million sources. These data, known as Q1 and representing just 0.45% of the observations planned for Euclid over the next few years, have already enabled numerous advances to be made, illustrating Euclid's extraordinary capacity to contribute to all areas of astrophysics. The Euclid Consortium is today publishing new scientific results to accompany the data.
The IAS teams at Orsay contributed actively to the various phases of the Euclid mission - from the first proposal to ESA to the final scientific results. Initially involved in instrumentation, with the design and delivery of the calibration lamp (CU) for the VIS imager, as well as numerous tests prior to launch, this participation has remained very important. It now concerns not only scientific analyses, but also the ground segment, and particularly the OU-MER group. The latter's role is to merge images from other observatories, essential complements to Euclid data, and to provide the community with an official catalog of astrophysical sources.
The first 34 scientific articles, 7 of which concern the scientific ground segment, have been submitted and associated with these data. Other articles will follow soon.

To discuss the Euclid mission, data and results, join us on Thursday March 20 at 8.30pm for a live broadcast on the Université Paris-Saclay youtube channel from the exceptional site of the Observatoire de Haute-Provence: an astrophysics evening hosted by AstroPierre, with the participation of several researchers and Master's students:
- results of the European space mission Euclid Q1;
- visit to a telescope at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence;
- testimonials from scientists and students on their career paths and motivations.
