The Galaxies
Introduction
The goal of this visit is to introduce the kids to the realm of the galaxies, and give them a feeling of the kind of analysis astronomers do.
After a 15 min introduction with slides, we distributed to each kid 3 sheets "Galaxies and the Hubble Deep Field", and two images of the Hubble Deep Field (one of the 3 camera images): one in black and white with 12 cells, the other in color (see below) with some galaxies numbered.
Each kid has to 1) count the galaxies in his/her cell and 2) identify the galaxies and sort them by morphology.
The galaxy counting allow the kids to have an idea of the number of galaxies in the visible universe (approx tens of billions at least). But the last part of the activity seemed a little bit too complicated for 4th graders.
The galaxy morphology and sorting seemed more fun. We had to tell them that they could write more than one galaxy per box. Questions like "There is no purple color box" were asked quickly.
The conclusions were exposed at the end of the visit: 1) there are many galaxies in the Universe 2) they evolve and are not static, in our expanding Universe 3) they have different shapes and colors, and 4) it's not easy to sort them because younger galaxies haven't a clear shape yet.
Visit done on April 7th, 2003.
