Solar Orbiter is a mission for the study of the Sun and its heiosphere. It was selected as the M1 mission of the ESA Cosmic Vision program. Launch is expected in 2018.
Solar Orbiter will be the first satellite for the exploration of inner parts of our solar system, allowing a continuous observation (in co-rotation) of active regions of the Sun and providing close-in observations of the polar regions of our star.
As for SOHO, the solar group will be strongly involved in this ESA mission in the instrument design and realisation, as illustrated by an IAS co-PI for the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager, a lead co-I for the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager, and a strong involvment in the operations and exploitation of the instrument Spectral Imaging of the Coronal Environment.
