Probing the Cosmic Infrared Background and
Investigating the Physical Properties of Infrared Galaxies

General presentation

Researchers from the IAS are involved in the study of galaxy formation and evolution, and in particular the infrared galaxies. Research themes include: characterization of the Cosmic Infrared Background, statistical and individual studies of IR galaxies.

We make use of data from infrared space telescopes like Planck, Herschel, and previously IRAS, COBE, ISO and Spitzer (and other wavelength data). We also develop models and perform simulations to prepare the next generation of telescopes, like JWST, SPICA and EUCLID.

Part of the work mentionned there are supported by INSU, PNCG, CNES, and also ANR: ANR-06-BLAN-0170 and ANR-09-BLAN-0224-02.

irgal is part of the IDOC (Integrated Data and Operation Center), located and operated at IAS (Orsay) under contract with CNRS, CNES, and Univiersite Paris-Sud.

irgal website content

This web site, nicknamed irgal (for IR Galaxies), provides material, results and services for the community:
  • model: downloadable code and downloadable result grids; links to other models on the market
  • value-added data: science products like galaxy number counts from space IR and submm missions, or Extragalactic Background Light measurements and constrains
  • simulations: distribution of products of the IR and submm simulated sky
  • science tools: stacking library, power spectrum estimation (poker)
