Science Goals for COR1: A Historical View

Abstract
The pioneering work of Lyot demonstrated that the Sun\'s corona could be viewed outside of eclipse. However, the fact that the corona was dynamic was not revealed fully until the space age discovery of CMEs. We will briefly review the history of these discoveries and give a personal perspective of what new understanding we may gain with STEREO.
