Who is an Astronomer ?
Introduction
The goal of this first visit is to take contact with the class, and explain who an astronomer is (female or male, young or old) and what they do.
After a brief introduction by our host, we ask the kids to draw what they think an astronomer looks like, or what they thing they might be doing. Their creativity is great, and it's very interesting to observe them drawing.
Then we quickly review the drawings. Most of them showed astronomers with small telescopes. Since this class has benefited from previous visits of amateur astronomers, the kids represent themselves astronomers like amateur astronomers. In the drawings, we had about 50% of female and 50% of male, and the astronomers on the drawings looked quite similar to us to some extend ! We explained them that astronomers are young or old, female or male, and that they spend most of their time in front of a computer, trying to undertsand the universe trough observations and/or theory. Only a few nights are devoted to the observations themeselves.
Visit done on November 19th, 2002.
